In 1996, the “New Choluteca Bridge” (also known as the Bridge of the Rising Sun as a nod to the Japanese company that designed and constructed it) was built and in 1998 it opened for use in Choluteca, Honduras. In October of 1998, Hurricane Mitch hit the region causing widespread flooding and devastation. The rising waters took out the access roads either side of the bridge but the bridge remained intact. However, when the flooding subsided it became evident that the river had carved a new path. It behoves us all, as individuals, families, leaderships and organisations to step back and do some assessing. Where is your river? Has it…

South Korean Bike Highway Has 30km Solar Roof
A ‘bike highway’ running between Daejon and Sejong in South Korea is a sight – or rather, a concept – you surely haven’t thought of before: it stretches for 32km, and it not only shields cyclists from the sun but also generates power at the same time. It’s true that a bicycle lane in the centre of a highway is an unusual location for one, especially with three lanes of traffic on either side of it, yet it works. The image shows a highway with a row of solar panels traveling down the median, and underneath them, a protected bike lane. Protecting and encouraging bike travel while gathering clean energy…

A Brazilian Couple Spent 20 Years Replanting A 1,754-Acre Forest Bringing
In 2001, the legendary photojournalist Sebastião Salgado had a dream of restoring the forest near his home in the state of Minas Gerais. Now 20 years later, his family property is a biodiverse paradise. His work over long years saw him, his wife Lélia, and volunteers plant 20 million trees from 290 different species across over 1,500 acres of desiccated hillsides, recreating a natural forest ecosystem into which rare animals have now come to live. Salgado’s story is a famous one. The photojournalist documented some of the most dramatic events of human misery of the 20th century. He authored half a dozen books, exhibited his photos around the world, and…

“I’m sure I’m not the only one who goes crazy from their kids
“I’m sure I’m not the only one who goes crazy from their kids asking for every single thing they see in a grocery store. I tell them no lots, but I think naturally kids just see and ask. Well, to distract them from this I started letting them pick out one can for the food bank – any can they choose – every time we go to the store, and they love it!They put so much thought into what can, they carry the can to the till, hand it to the cashier, and then put it in the food bank bin. My daughter likes to explain to people what the…

The Kitten A Forever Home Following The Journey To Recovery
Kittens, with their mewling cries and soft, delicate bodies, are particularly vulnerable. In a world fraught with dangers and a lack of understanding, some rather sad situations are bound to happen, unfortunately. People, including children, can be thoughtless in their interactions with these fragile creatures. The disconnect is troubling, a harsh reminder of how humanity can sometimes fail its furred, feathered, and scaled friends. In this context, a recent story unfolded on the internet, where a Redditor by the handle “ikedness” happened upon a small kitten in quite the predicament. Unbelievably, some rather unkind kids had cruelly glued the kitten to some kind of object. At a loss for what…

1 Story A ginger cat called George was recently outfoxed when he returned from a walk in the garden to find an uninvited guest had taken over his bed. “When I came downstairs, and walked passed the kitchen into the bathroom, I did a double take as in the kitchen window I could see a pair of huge ears,” said house cat’s owner, 47-year-old Meloney Blayze from Petts Wood, south east London. “‘I thought, “hmm, those are not the cat’s ears”, and I turned the light on to look at what was in the cat’s bed – and it was a red fox.” Meloney had woken up at 4am to…
